Although the incidence of breast cancer has increased, mortality rates have decreased due to earlier, more accurate diagnosis and more effective treatment. Mammography can identify lesions several years before they become physically apparent, and breast specimen imaging has long been used to document the successful removal of these abnormalities.
Author Linda A. Monda, B.S.R.T., R.T.(R)(M)(QM), discusses the various types of biopsies, methods of guiding biopsy procedures and the techniques used for specimen imaging and their history. Specimen imaging has become an integral part of breast intervention procedures because it can confirm the success of the procedure and helps guarantee a proper diagnosis.
