Transgender individuals are those who identify as a gender different from the one assigned at birth. Medical providers who understand the history, health care challenges, research, and clinical aspects of treating transgender patients will be able to apply that knowledge in the radiation oncology department to create an affirmative and welcoming environment for these individuals. This article shares census data and population-based studies, discusses the unique needs of transgender patients in the health care setting, and provides recommendations on how to create an environment where transgender patients safely can seek quality cancer care.
