This presentation provides an overview of the mechanics and process of x-ray production with a focus on the role of kVp, mAs, tube polarity, potential difference, and kinetic energy. We review applications of the line focus principle, the heel effect, factors related to the target focal spot, and target geometric factors. We make associations regarding qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the x-ray beam with definitions and factors as we relate the concepts to the x-ray emission spectrum. We also explain and illustrate changing kVp effects, mAs effects, and filtration effects via the x-ray emission spectrum. We define, discuss and illustrate D-max as it relates to skin sparing, electron equilibrium, the bolus effect, and Compton scatter. We end the presentation with a discussion of the interactions with matter within the diagnostic KeV energy range and in the therapeutic MeV energy range.
