57CrSodium Chromate can be used for the determination of a patient’s red blood cell volume, also known as red cell mass. Using concepts based on the dilution principle, this test is a quick, non-invasive procedure with relatively good accuracy. Upon determining the red cell mass, the patient’s total blood volume can also be determined. Due to the lengthy half-life of the 57Cr, after the red cell mass procedure has been completed, two additional tests can be performed: the red cell survival test determines the half-time clearance rate of the red blood cells, and the red cell sequestration test monitors the rate at which the hemolyzed red blood cells are removed from circulation by the body. This presentation will discuss the theory, protocol, and calculations behind these non-imaging nuclear medicine exams.
