Children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may be referred to the imaging department for routine exams, or after trauma. Patients with ASD have difficulty with some common communication and social behaviors. Imaging professionals should be aware of the range of autism-associated characteristics, as well as comorbidities with this patient population. Medical imaging staff should also be aware of the ethical and legal implications of caring for patients with ASD, including autonomy, surrogate decision makers, and informed consent.
